Am I done moving?
I don’t know, yet. I know a lot of people who are considering making the trek out to LA: friends, a relative, my collection of Gamecube games that wouldn’t fit on my initial trip out here. It seems to soundly fit a lot of people, and while I’m still new to the city, trying to wiggle an ass imprint in Jeff’s recliner, I’m always thinking about my future.
Back in May 2008, I had freshly cleaned 100% of GTA:IV, wasn’t seeing Indiana Jones IV with everyone else, and flew IV states east of where I was living at the time to check out The Big Apple. I took the trip with my mom who was born in upstate New York and raised within ferry distance of the city, in New Jersey. So my desire to check out the Nintendo Center and visit Liberty City IRL coincided well with her re-stomp her old grounds.
Looking back on it, I was absolutely enticed with northern Jersey. We stayed in NJ with intentions to visit The Empire State. Jersey receives flak, and I wasn’t there long enough to see why. It was like Long Grove in Illinois, but spread out over everywhere. Anywhere we drove was either scenic, or a splotch of ma/pa establishments with your occasional nationwide chain sprinkled in, in case you weren’t feeling adventurous at the moment. It felt clean, easy to breathe, and quaint. I really would like to go back.
Of course, we visited NYC. Unfortunately, it was only once in the few days we were out there. I loved it. Honking traffic, a midwestern climate, coastal digs, towering architecture, in your face lights, and the swank was through the roof. Four years later, four years smarter, I know that Los Angeles is the place to begin, New York is where you go to step it up in the entertainment industry.
Right now I’m in Los Angeles and I can guarantee you that at most given times, I’m within interviewing distance of Jason Lee. LA, I love what you’ve done for me. Because of you, I’m not living in my mom’s basement, claiming to be an aspiring journalist only covering school meetings once/week. Whoops.
My future’s not set in stone, I don’t know if it will ever happen, but if the golden opportunity arises, I will cross the country in favor of hurricanes over earthquakes. I know that in New York I won’t be as deep in with celebs as I would be in LA, but give it a few years. I’ll have much more experience with fame, and maybe I’ll be free to move on. Will I trade the City of Angels for the City of Giants? I don’t know, and that’s what excites me the most.
My point’s been made, saying anything more will run this further into the ground.
TL;DR - Always keeping life in New York in my thoughts. Maybe in a few years…
